Alright, Chaos Planners! Assemble!
Beachside bliss beckons, whispering sweet nothings of relaxation. But between the lure of all-inclusive buffets and the guilt monster whispering about neglected workout routines, striking a healthy vacation balance can feel like scaling Mount Everest… in flip-flops.
From my past posts on my quest for better health, you know that this Mama is trying to stay healthy and active to keep up with this circus of five boys from 2 to 11. Well, we recently went on an amazing 4-day trip to St. Thomas, without the minions, and I was determined to keep my health goals intact. So let me share how I made it happen, and honestly, I still REALLY enjoyed this vacation!
Staying Active: It’s Not All About the Gym
Let’s be honest, lugging workout gear can feel like packing an extra kid. But fear not, there are a million ways to stay active even without a gym membership. In Fact, our BEAUTIFUL hotel, Club Wyndham Elysian Beach Resort right on the beach, didn’t even have a gym! So, here’s how I kept the energy flowing:
-
- Hiking Adventures: We took a ferry from St. Thomas to St. John to explore the local trails in a national park. Fresh air, stunning views, and trails that led to private beaches for a quick swim – win-win!
- Beach Bonanza: From swimming and boogie boarding to beach volleyball and sandcastle building, the possibilities are endless (and exhausting). I know we all love our umbrella drink in our beach chair, but we made part of beach days active too. From sandy walks to kayaking, our beach days were filled with adventure, too.
- City Slicker Fitness: Take advantage of walking tours, rent bikes, or create a create your own sightseeing walk. We parked in downtown Charolette Amalie and walked for hours, going in each shop, up and down steep hilled streets and seeing all the city had to offer.
- Quick “In-Room” Workouts: Yes, sometimes being naturally active can fall short of that “just went to the gym” boost, so just look around and create your own routine! Our resort consisted of 20 different buildings, each 3-4 stories tall built into a hillside. I spent one more doing over 110 flights (up and down) of stairs, climbing the hillside and touring each building. It was a WORKOUT!
Healthy Eating on Vacation
Vacations are synonymous with indulgence, but even the most dedicated chocoholic (or ice cream-aholic in my case!) can crave a healthy bite after a week of endless buffets. Here are some ways to make healthy choices feel like a decadent treat:
- Local Feast: Explore local markets and incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your meals. Think colorful salads, vibrant platters, and exotic fruits – your taste buds will thank you. And I LOVED all the fresh fruit that St. Thomas had to offer!
- Charcuterie Charisma: Ditch the sandwiches and greasy chips for your in-room lunches and opt for a beautifully curated charcuterie board with meats, cheeses, olives, and a baguette. It’s a feast for the eyes and a satisfying, balanced snack.
- Hydration Hero: Keep those energy levels high and cravings at bay by staying hydrated throughout the day. Pack a reusable water bottle and make refilling a priority. Just skip the sugary sodas and try sparkling water with a splash of lemon or enjoy flavorful herbal teas for a refreshing, caffeine-free alternative.
Splurging Strategically
Part of the vacation magic is indulging in the unique experiences a new place offers. Here’s how to strategically sprinkle in those decadent moments without derailing your healthy goals:
- Wine Down Time: Sample the local wines or craft beers. Savor the flavor and enjoy it in moderation, soaking in the atmosphere… with your partner by your side.
- Sweet Surrender: Yes, have a taste of that local pastry or that decadent dessert. But savor each bite – it’s about the experience, not the quantity. Luis and I chose to share desserts at night, or skip dinner and just do appetizers and desserts to prevent overeating so we could still enjoy the atmosphere.
- Beach Bum Bliss: In the midst of all the activity and fun, block out a day for pure, unadulterated relaxation. Lounge on a beach chair with a good book, soak up the sun, and let the sound of the waves lull you into a blissful state. And don’t feel guilty all day long!
Planning for Success
Remember, a little planning goes a long way. Here’s what you can do to ensure a smooth and healthy vacation:
- Pack Smart: Make a list of essential items like sunscreen, hats, and comfortable walking shoes. Pack healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, and granola bars to avoid unhealthy temptations.
- Choose Your Accommodations Wisely: Consider a hotel with a fitness center or one that’s located near walking paths and parks.
- Be Flexible: While it’s important to have a plan, be prepared to adjust it as needed. Embrace spontaneity and enjoy the unexpected moments.
Remember, the goal is to strike a balance between relaxation and activity, indulgence and moderation. By following these tips, you can enjoy a guilt-free vacation that leaves you feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to conquer the chaos back home.
So, go ahead, book that trip, pack your bags, and embrace the adventure. Your healthier, happier self awaits!
